Highlights:
- Once a year you can request a free credit score from the three nationwide credit bureaus
- Reviewing your credit report is a healthy financial habit
Reviewing your credit report is essential to maintaining a healthy credit score and your overall financial future. You can receive one free credit report from each of the three main credit bureaus each year. You can also access your report for free annually by visiting https://www.annualcreditreport.com.
Which credit bureaus offer a free credit report?
The three main credit bureaus that offer a free credit report are: Experian™, Equifax® and TransUnion®. If you enroll in Chase Credit Journey®, which you don't have to be a Chase customer to use, you can view your credit score provided by Experian for free with no impact to your credit. You are also able to view your Experian credit report through Credit Journey.
Reasons to check your credit report
Regardless of where you request or access your credit report, it’s important to review it carefully for a few reasons. These include, but are not limited to:
- Looking for potential inaccuracies or errors (though rare, they can impact your credit score)
- Keeping up to date with your financial goals and progress
- Reviewing your open and closed accounts
- Monitoring your credit utilization
Reviewing your credit report is a healthy financial habit that can help you understand your credit score and works towards improving it, which can positively impact your overall financial outlook.
How to receive your credit report
To receive your free annual credit report from the credit bureaus, contact them directly by phone or by visiting their website. Keep in mind that you may need to provide information to verify your identity, including but not limited to:
- Social Security number
- Current address
- Date of birth
Additionally, when you enroll in Credit Journey, you can review your Experian credit score there for free.
You can receive only one free credit report per year from each of the three main credit bureaus. To review your credit report more frequently through the credit bureaus, you may need to pay additional fees. That is to say, should you request your report from the bureaus more than once a year, make sure you review any potential fees this could cost you. According to the Consumer Protection Financial Bureau (CPFB), credit bureaus cannot make you pay more than $14.50 for a credit report as of fall 2023.
Remember, you can check your own credit score on Credit Journey® without worrying about impacting your credit.
