Where to Stay in Napa and Sonoma Right Now

For many, a California wine country weekend might evoke very specific images: vineyard-hopping through Napa and Sonoma, splurging on fine dining and, most importantly, staying at a posh hotel with valley views. That type of getaway is certainly still popular, especially thanks to properties like Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley, but several other hotels across the region are taking things in a new direction.
That means your getaway might bring you to a redwood-adjacent reinvention of a historic inn in the Russian River Valley, an art-filled mansion in Healdsburg or a wellness-focused property near downtown St. Helena. And beyond wine tasting, you can spend your time lounging by the pool, relaxing at the spa (often with grape-related treatments) or even hiking through vineyard-covered hills. Whichever you choose, these seven hotels promise the perfect weekend in wine country.

Four Seasons Resort and Residences Napa Valley
Calistoga
Member of The Edit by Chase Travel
Opened in 2021 in laid-back Calistoga, this Four Seasons property should be on the radar of any true oenophile: It shares its mountain-view plot with the organic Elusa Winery, part of the Calistoga AVA, which is known for its cabernet sauvignons. Interiors lean into the valley’s farming heritage, with design touches like equestrian-inspired leather bits hung in the guest rooms and ceramic rancher hats behind the front desk. You can join a guided wine tasting or sample the spoils of the winery at the award-winning on-site restaurant, Auro.

Meadowood Napa Valley
St. Helena

Set just outside the tony town of St. Helena, this 250-acre country estate is designed for serenity, from its renowned spa (with an outdoor garden lounge) to three pools and oak-lined hiking trails. The 36 rooms and suites, which have a homespun simplicity, are divided among categories including Treetop Rooms, with wraparound windows overlooking the foliage, and Cottage Rooms, which have wood-burning fireplaces and private decks. The renowned restaurant was sadly destroyed in a 2020 wildfire, but now there’s Forum for seasonally inspired fare. Also on-site is The Wine Center, which offers classes, themed dinners and more.

Alila Napa Valley
St. Helena
Member of The Edit by Chase Travel
This outpost of the Hyatt brand is set in posh St. Helena and surrounded by Beringer Vineyards, just a few steps away. A restored 1907 Georgian farmhouse hosts the Italian-French restaurant Violetto and six of the 64 rooms and suites; the rest are found in new stone-clad buildings, and each has its own balcony and firepit. Beyond the restaurant, the farm-to-table philosophy continues on the massage table as well, where treatments include grape seeds and local Vintner’s Daughter skincare products. And you can incorporate regional aromas, like lavender and fir, into a custom room spray during a scent-making course.

Auberge du Soleil
Rutherford
Member of The Edit by Chase Travel
Thirty-three acres of heritage olive and oak trees surround this Provence-inspired, adults-only resort that started life in 1981 as Napa Valley’s first fine-dining restaurant. Over the years, it grew with the surrounding wine region, adding an inn that has become a NorCal icon, with just 50 rooms and suites. The cuisine at the acclaimed restaurant is still exemplary, thanks to partnerships with area farmers and producers, but it’s the little things that make your stay so special, from the outdoor bathtubs that come with certain room categories to the sculpture garden with works by more than 60 California artists.

Montage Healdsburg
Healdsburg

If Montage Healdsburg had its way, you’d spend all your time here outdoors. In many of the 130 tree house–style rooms and suites, a third of the floor space is outside, including indoor-outdoor showers and sprawling balconies equipped with firepits. There are e-bikes to borrow, pickleball courts and even archery lessons, and you can join the resort’s beekeeper to learn about the resident hives or taste honey. The zero-edge pool is perched over rows of cabernet sauvignon vines and close to the resort’s more casual restaurant, the alfresco Hudson Springs Bar and Grill.

The Madrona
Healdsburg
This Healdsburg hotel opened its doors in 2022, but its story goes back much further. Part of the hotel occupies a private mansion built in 1881 during the Aesthetic Movement, which celebrated “art for art’s sake,” and you can see its influence in over-the-top patterns and salon-style walls of art. Rooms are divided between the original residence, the Carriage House and a series of bungalows that date to the 1860s. The restaurant and bar use ingredients from the estate’s garden, and activities include movies on the lawn and weekend brunch.

The Stavrand Russian River Valley
Guerneville
Tucked away in Sonoma’s eclectic Russian River Valley (near the LGBTQ-friendly hub of Guerneville) and surrounded by redwood groves and fruit orchards, the former Applewood Inn was completely transformed during the pandemic into this breezy, boho-style hotel. Twenty-one rooms are divided between a 1922 historic mansion and two newer buildings, and many of them feature gas fireplaces, skylights and outdoor cedar hot tubs. Your minibar will, of course, be stocked with pinot noir and chardonnay sourced from the surrounding valley, and you can also sample local wines during the free apéritif hour each evening.
